Match & Handicap are considering moving to an electronic start sheet for the Saturday competitions during the summer. So a competition has been set-up called Tee Time Booking Test with a blank summer start sheet. We would encourage members to book and cancel a tee time using both methods below and leave us feedback via Facebook, Twitter, Email or letter.

3R Days

Everyone should know the 3R's in golf but how many of us are guilty of not caring for our own or other courses?

So the council have decided to make the last Saturday of January, February and March 2012 a 3R Day when everyone will be encouraged to take time to:

Rake Bunkers
Replace Divots
Repair Pitch Marks

If these days prove successful we will not need to repeat them but people tend to fall back into bad habits. So we anticipate repeating these days throughout the year and on other competition days. (Sunday and Wednesday)

Common Objections:

Speed of Play - The council acknowledges the fact this will have an impact on the speed of play and would ask members to be patient with the groups in front. Why not take the time to look around the area where you are waiting. At the end of January and February we will still be playing a shortened course so any delay should have very little impact. Hopefully by the time we return to 18 holes we will notice a change in peoples habits and there will be less to repair.

Its visitors / other members and not me - As members we should be setting an example to other members and visitors. The more people who do the 3R's the less members who are actively doing it will have to do in the future. Hence the reason for introducing the 3R Days.

Ultimately the course and us as members will benefit.

Care of the Course taken from 2012 Rules of Golf:

Bunkers

Before leaving a bunker, players should carefully fill up and smooth over all holes and footprints made by them and any nearby made by others. If a rake is within reasonable proximity of the bunker, the rake should be used for this purpose.

Repair of Divots, Ball-Marks and Damage by Shoes

Players should carefully repair any divot holes made by them and any damage to the putting green made by the impact of a ball (whether or not made by the player himself). On completion of the hole by all players in the group, damage to the putting green caused by golf shoes should be repaired.

Preventing Unnecessary Damage

Players should avoid causing damage to the course by removing divots when taking practice swings or by hitting the head of a club into the ground, whether in anger or for any other reason.

Players should ensure that no damage is done to the putting green when putting down bags or the flagstick.

In order to avoid damaging the hole, players and caddies should not stand too close to the hole and should take care during the handling of the flagstick and the removal of a ball from the hole. The head of a club should not be used to remove a ball from the hole.

Players should not lean on their clubs when on the putting green, particularly when removing the ball from the hole.

The flagstick should be properly replaced in the hole before the players leave the putting green.

Local notices regulating the movement of golf carts should be strictly observed.

Winter Handicaps

CONGU rules state that handicaps cannot be adjusted if playing a shortened course and/or lifting and dropping the ball in the rough.

As we adjust handicaps to the keep the Winter Competition competitive, these adjustments cannot appear on a members handicap record. So from Saturday 29th October 2011 until the end of the winter league all scores returned will not be uploaded to Golfnet.

At the end of the Winter League all handicaps will revert back to as they were at the end of the summer.

72 Hole Competition

The club would like to know if the members would be interested in playing a 72 hole competition next summer.

Draft formats:

Stroke Competition - played Thursday through to Sunday over a weekend in June. Maximum handicap allowance 10. Members with handicap above 10 can enter but will only get a maximum handicap allowance of 10. Prizes will be awared for lowest nett scores over all four rounds.

Stableford Competition - played Thursday through to Sunday on the same weekend as the stroke competition. Prizes will be awarded for highest points score over all four rounds.

If interested please vote on the right hand side of the screen. If you think this format will not work please vote 'no thanks'.

Competition Finalists

Greenacres Golf Club would like to congratulate David Thompson in reaching the final of the 2011 Trilby Tour and Bill Guest who has reached the NI final the howdidido singles competition

Highlights of the qualifying event and final of the Trilby tour will be televised on Sky Sports in September but the final takes place on Thursday 11st Augst 2011.

Bill has home advantage on Monday 15th Augst 2011.

We wish them both the best of luck.

Captains Thoughts: I believe we should also be setting the standard before we go out onto the course. If the members room on a Saturday afternoon is anything to judge how our members treat the course, then it's not surprising there are divots, pitch mark and footprints in the bunkers.

Captains Thoughts: As has already been said on Facebook everyone should take responsibility for leaving any course in the condition you would want to find it.

Who’s to blame… I don't know, but I firmly believe it is up to ALL MEMBERS including JUNIORS to set the standard we expect at our Club. Then once we have set the standard then we should expect visitors to follow them.

So the next time you are out on the course please fix your divots, rake the bunker behind you and repair your pitch marks.

If you go out onto the course in the evening to practice and plan to hit a number of balls into a green. Do you play from the fairway or the light rough? Do you fix your divots and pitch marks? If you practice bunker shots, do you make sure you rake the bunker?

Captains Thoughts: If you have listened to or read a news headline recently you can not help but notice that things are tough financially and believe it or not these have an impact on Greenacres Golf Club. Like everything else the cost of maintaining the course is increasing year on year, so it means there is less money for the additional work the members and owners know needs carried out. Sand in bunkers, sprinkler system, tee boxes I'm sure the list is endless.

I know for a fact not every member would want or could not afford to pay higher fee's each year or make a one off payment just to get a sprinkler system. Until such time, surely as golfers we should trying to learn the skills to play to the best of our ability no matter the condition of the course/greens we are playing.

Please remember the course is only 15 years old. Ask any of the members how much it has improved in that time and just think what it will like in another 15 years.

Personally I think the course and greens are in the best condition they have ever been.

Continued Success for Junior Cup Team

Last night the Junior Cup Team travelled to Fortwilliam Golf Club and beat Balmoral Golf Club to progress to the next round. Congratulations to David Murphy, Robin Johnston, Declan Hughes, David Thompson and especially Conor McErlane.

With four matches finished and the match still all square, Conor had an ever increasing gallery as he played the last three holes. A par putt on the 17^th was good enough to break the deadlock and half in five was enough to seal the match at the 18^th.

We wish the team captain Mark Hardy and the rest of the lads every success in the next round.

Competition Sign In

Every time a member sign's into a competition the computer will now print a small label with the members name, handicap, competition name, competition date and sign in time.

This label should be attached to a score card and presented to the starter on a Saturday or the Centre's Reception for all other competitions.

Members will not be allowed to pay their entrance fee for the competition until they produce a card with the label attached.

Members Handicap

Members handicap records have been restored back to 31st October 2010 with the exception of those that were adjusted as part of the Annual Review. A full list of these adjustments can be found at: Annual Review.

All subsequent competitions will now appear on your handicap record, and hopefully by the start of April 2011 we will be able to hold qualifying competitions.

Winter League 2010/2011

Unfortunately even after extending the Winter League by two weeks until the 12th March 2011 we still only managed to play 11 weeks, so 7 weeks (11 x 2/3 = 7.3333) will count towards your final score.

If members or teams are tied; prizes will be decided based on the team or members highest 5 scores and then 3 scores if necessary.

Greenacres Golf Club are holding a second Poker Night on Friday 21st January 2011 at 7:30pm in Barnaby's.

There will be no admission charge but entry into the poker competition will be £10.

Every member who attended the first night thoroughly enjoyed themselves, so we would encourage all members who like a flutter to come along.

Summer Start Times

The Draft Summer Start Sheet has been based on the master start sheet at the end of the previous years summer competitions for the last couple of years and the Club have found that our approach suits the majority of members. Without a start sheet in operation a large number of members would turn up for the most popular slots between 9am and 11am.

As a club we are aware this means the only available tee-times are in the afternoon and this doesn't necessarily suit every member looking for a permanent slot. This is why we have a rule in place that requires members unable to play in a Saturday competition to remove their name from the start sheet before 5:30pm on Friday. Giving members who would like a different tee-time the opportunity to take up an earlier/later slot.

Winter League Handicap Adjustments

Competitions include the Ulster Cup, Jimmy Bruen Shield, Holt Shield, East Antrim League, Junior Cup, Irish Mixed Foursomes, Pierce Purcell, the Ulster Fourball, North Antrim Shield, and Belfast & District.

The captain’s role involves managing the team through practice, team selection organisation and completion of matches. The club council want to give an opportunity for all members including 2010 team captains to get involved in this side of club management.

HowDidiDo National Matchplay Championships

I could not follow in the footsteps of Anthony McCullough & Brendan Delargy after finishing 2nd in my regional finals at Peebles, Cardrona, Scotland on the 11th October.

I now look forward to competing in next year’s HowDidiDo National Matchplay and would urge members to look out for this competition next year which gets a poor turn out from Northern Ireland at present. I would like to wish Anthony & Brendan good luck in January.

HowDidiDo National Matchplay Championships

Andrew McMeekin will be competing in the HowDidiDo National Matchplay Championships in Scotland on Monday 11th October, after successfully winning the Northern Ireland region.

If successful in Scotland he will be heading off to Portugal for the grand finals in Vilamoura, a 5 day event to decide who is National Matchplay Champion.

We look forward to hearing the result in October.

Greenacres Golf Club members continue to have success in competitions as Andrew McMeekin, Paul Cowan, Bill Guest and Jonny Philips have won an all expenses paid trip to La Manga Golf Resort in Spain.

The team qualified with a score of 99 points from a field of over 45 teams at Cairndhu Golf Club to a 6 team final. They then proceed to win with a score of 86 points in the final and are now looking forward to their trip next April.

Gents, following our disappointment in trying to rescue the Patterson Trophy, it gives me great pleasure to inform everyone that Anthony McCullough and Brendan Delargy have successfully won their regional qualification in the Volvo Matchplay Competition. On Tuesday afternoon they defeated a 2 & 6 handicap better ball from City of Derry GC. Now they travel to Scotland for national finals. Although this is not an official GUI event it is fantastic to see 2 of our members achieving great heights. We will follow them avidly in Scotland, I’m sure.

The Race to Portugal

Monte da Quinta Resort (www.mqclub.com) is a new luxury resort located opposite the 18th fairway of Quinto de Lago, in Faro, Portugal, one of Europe’s finest courses. The resort is made up of The Suites (130 room Aparthotel) which was opened in 2008 and the Club which is a selection of exclusive villas and townhouses opened in 2005. Monte da Quinta Resort has a strategic partnership with the golf course with access to all of its three courses including the new Laranjal course.

In order to promote their property the Resort are running The Race to Portugal and I have the opportunity to offer participation in the competition to a small number of Clubs here in Ireland. The event will take place early in November 2010 and the Resort is offering a wonderful prize to each participating Club. The winner of each club qualifier will be provided with a weeks stay, on a Bed & Breakfast basis at the luxury The Suites with two days competitive golf at Quinta do Lago Golf Club against other clubs from Ireland and the U.K. This is a super prize to offer to your members and is approved by the Royal & Ancient for expenses.

The qualifier shall be a four ball better ball and the winning pair will represent their Club at the final.

Although the R&A have not banned the use of Range Finders and other such devices, it is up to individual clubs to introduce a local rule permitting their use in a competition.

After discussing this matter the Council have decided NOT to introduce a local rule as thy feel these devices have the potential to further slow down play.

Yellow Ball Competition

If you have not played the yellow ball competition before this is how it works.

Every group will get a yellow ball and an extra team card from the starter.

Before starting your round you need to decide your playing order.

Each player will take it in turn to play a full hole with the yellow ball and record their stableford points on the team card.

You continue in this order with the yellow ball until the ball is lost or you complete the round. Whatever comes first!!!

There will still be a standard stableford competition for everyone in addition to the Yellow Ball competition.

It is up to the individual teams to decide if they want a forfeit for losing the ball!!!
